Adith, Nathan, Dean, Benjamin and Zachary.
Five Amigos

Can you guess which one is the ham?
Dean went to the park for a play date with a few of his friends from school. It was a beautiful weather day…just perfect for running around and not getting really sweaty.
For the record, Nathan—the kid drinking from the water bottle—and Dean have to be separated at school. If those two sit next to one another they both get too riled up and it's nothing but trouble for everyone.

Dean and some friends go blackberry picking.
Blackberries
08-08-08
It's the first day of the 2008 Olympics and a day on which tens of thousands of people want to get married or have their baby delivered.
08-08-08.
According to Wikipedia, the word for “eight” in Mandarin sounds similar to the word which means “prosper” or “wealth.” In regional dialects the words for “eight” and “fortune” are also similar, e.g. Cantonese “baat” and “faat.”
On a much lessor—but perhaps more enjoyable—note, it was also the day that Berty, Dean, and several friends went back to a familiar place to pick blackberries!
As you can tell by the picture, Dean liked it, two of his friends loved it, and one of his friends decided to spit half chewed blackberries back into the container.

They are hopped up on blackberries and headed for peaches.
Running
08-08-08
In addition to blackberries, the kids also picked peaches.
Most of day found Berty shouting, “Don't run too far ahead…STOP!!” way too many times. After about the third time he yelled that he realized that there was no real reason why they shouldn't be running, so he let Dean go crazy.
Two minutes later, Dean tripped over his own feet and fell down and scraped his knee. No blood came of it, so no harm was done.
Berty is learning to relax.

They all relax for some snacks.
Picnic
08-08-08
Astrik and Kelly (the other parents) had brought tons of snacks for a post-picking picnic.
Berty and Dean shared the carrots, grapes, and cheese and crackers that they brought, while enjoying the cheerio marshmallow bars and muffins that Astrik brought.
The muffins and marshmallow bars were far more popular. Hard to believe, eh?

Football
08-08-08
No picnic would be a success without a little game of football.
This is what happens when one kid knows all the rules, and the other three just want to run around.
Dean does an excellent job of picking his nose.

If it is there, I will climb it.
Climbing
08-03-08
Yes, he is climbing.
No, Berty did not help him get up on the table.
Yes, the chair no longer sits next to the table.
No, it probably won't make a difference.
Luke knows he is doing something wrong. Just look at his face as he is climbing onto the table.

Happiness is a cold popsicle.
Popsicle
07-25-08
Luke has been opening wide for food lately. His hunger appears to be insatiable.
The latest nickname he has is “Tank.”
Berty and Jo are already saving money for the teenage years when Luke will eat them out of house and home.
1. Luke waits for the popsicle.
2. The cold feels good on his gums (he's teething).
3. Luke savors the flavor.
4. The verdict? Nothing but popsicle goodness.

Arrrrrrggghhh!!!
The Pirate
07-18-08
Grandma Marilyn and Grandpa Johnny drove up from Florida for a little visit.
Having your almost 4 year old grandson put hats on your head isn't the worst thing that could happen after a long day of driving.
Having your 38 year old son take pictures of it, however, makes it a little harder to stomach.

He is secretly enjoying it.
The Captain

If we could read Johnny's mind we would probably hear him saying, “Please, dear God, let this be the last hat that I have to try on.”
Dean wanted to get him some more hats to try on, but, inexplicably, Johnny declined to take him up on that offer.

Waiting to hunt dragonflies.
A Rest Before the Hunt
07-19-08
Early Saturday morning, Jo, Dean, and Grandma Marilyn headed to a nearby park to catch some butterflies and dragonflies.
It was an event that was sponsored (free of charge!) by a local non-profit organization dedicated to promoting the preservation and proliferation of healthy wildlife habitats in the county.
Marilyn wore her butterfly shirt, butterfly necklace and butterfly earrings.
Dean brought his binoculars.

Dean and his new friend look for dragonflies.
The Net
07-19-08
Dean got a chance with the net and actually caught a dragonfly!
What was more exciting was having the conservancy volunteer identify and show the dragonfly to all the attendees of the event.
Later, Berty was a little surprised to learn that there are over 45 different types of dragonflies, and over 20 different types of damselflies in the local area.
Grandma Marilyn and Dean saw almost a dozen different types.

Halloween Pennant

Here's a video of the volunteer showing off Dean's catch.
The video that won't be shown to you is the one where Dean let the lid off a container a little too soon, setting a captured butterfly free.
Let's just forget about that whole incident.

Captured by Dean.
Dragonfly
07-19-08
Just in case you were wondering what a Halloween Pennant dragonfly looks like up close.
This dragonfly is a “skimmer” and, like most adult dragonflies, will probably only live for 4-6 weeks.

They went for a swim.
Cooling Off
07-19-08
After an eventful morning of getting in touch with nature, and after a short nap, the Fam went for a cool dip in the pool.
Dean couldn't wait to show Grandma Marilyn how well he has been swimming.

Dean floats with Grandma Marilyn.
Floating
07-19-08
In addition to swimming, Dean has been working on his floating.
Grandma Marilyn gave him a few pointers.

Grandpa Johnny coaches Luke on how to hold a bottle.
Helping Hands
07-19-08
Meanwhile, at the table next to the pool, Grandpa Johnny watched over Luke and made sure he was hydrated.
Luke played the dropping game.
He dropped his bottle, Grandpa picked it up. He dropped his bottle again, Grandpa picked it up again.

Luke loves ice cream.
Ice Cream
07-19-08
Later that night the Fam headed to a local restaurant and then got some Ben & Jerry's ice cream.
Do you think Luke liked it?

Dean helps Jo make cookies.
Peach Cookies
07-20-08
Dean is anticipating all of the tasty flavor of a peach cookie.
He helped Jo make the special treats by putting the ingredients into the blender and turning it on and off.

Jo sews now. She has the technology.
Sewing
07-20-08
Grandma Marilyn owns about 20 different types of sewing machines (not including the knitting ones and the associated paraphernalia).
She graciously decided to donate one of them to the Dam Fam. Here you can see Jo attempting to sew with the machine for the first time while Marilyn provides advice.
Note the concentration on Jo's face.
Note the look of fear on Dean's face. Jo is attempting to sew together two of Dean's airplane blankets to make them one giant blanket.
Dean cannot fall asleep without his airplane blanket. Let's not think about what might happen should Jo mess up.
We'll give you a hint; imagine Linus without his blanket…or Kenny (from the movie Mr. Mom) without his woobie.

Two novices play Go Fish.
Go Fish
07-20-08
Johnny got in a quick game of Go Fish with Dean.
Luke also tried to join in by smacking Johnny in the knee with a plastic hammer.
